Social Innovation through Lighting also means financing research into how certain elements of sociological analysis can be integrated in lighting design.
This is what led to the Social Lightscape research programme. The programme consisted of a series of international workshops with students, professionals and adolescents, organised to provide explanations of how to understand social space in order to focus lighting design more directly on improving the life of people and the local community.

“Social Research in Design seeks to disrupt the normal design process, starting from the principle that social research has to be an integral part of urban space design. This means that designers elaborate their own idea of critical issues and keep asking themselves questions that move the project in unexpected directions. It also means that designers have to involve local people in their research.”

“Lighting is always at the centre of debates regarding economic and environmental costs, safety and well-being. To develop these themes and to understand the role of light in people’s lives, it is essential for designers to have a greater understanding and awareness of social dynamics. The Configuring Light workshops have been a precious opportunity to understand how a global vision of social and spatial dynamics can be an effective support for lighting design professionals.”
Don Slater, Co-Director of Configuring Light and Associate Professor (Reader) in Sociology at the London School of Economics (LSE)
In 2017, iGuzzini was presented with the “Best Partner in the Industry” award for this initiative at the Professional Lighting Design Conference.
