Hotel Torni's 13 storeys have made it an important landmark in the city of Helsinki since its foundation in 1931. When it was completed, it was the tallest building in Helsinki and is still one of the tallest buildings in Finland.
Its records include being the first fully electrified building in Finland, having a state-of-the-art telephone exchange, en-suite bathrooms (a novelty at the time that only became the norm in Finland in the 1980s) and even a rooftop docking for the German Graf Zeppelin airship (never used).

The hotel's bold architecture and luxurious facilities soon made it the meeting point for the city's cultural life. Politicians, intellectuals and artists, such as composer Jean Sibelius and Nobel Prize winner for literature F.E. Sillanpää, foreign celebrities, such as US President Herbert Hoover, Prince Bertil of Sweden, American aviator Charles Lindbergh and legendary entertainer Josephine Baker, not to mention Torni's fame as a base for spies during World War II, used to gather here.

In 2018, the hotel underwent a complete refurbishment, mainly affecting the interior, particularly the restaurant, bars and reception area.
The history of the iconic building guided the design lines as the original architecture had to be respected.  As part of an art project parallel to the renovation, new works of art were added to the Torni's impressive art collection, choosing from different styles from various eras.

The exterior lighting was given the task of indicating the renovation work carried out inside through a new visibility in the urban landscape.
The first four floors of the building and the 9-storey tower above them were highlighted in a solemn and dignified manner with white light, but with a warm colour temperature of 2700 K. Grazing effect of the Linealuce Compact 47 creates uniformity on all vertical surfaces and highlights the different materiality of the bricks and plasterwork.

Project Quote

"The lighting concept of Torni is in close relation to the architecture of Art Deco skyscrapers. Gently fading layered illumination emphasizes the verticality all the way to the skybar on the top of the 13th floor where you can have a glare-free view over the city of Helsinki. In the design process of creating a warm, soft and inviting illumination for the Hotel facade we paid extra attention on the quality of the white light as well as maintainability. Final outcome is an example of successful collaboration between architects, designers, manufacturers and contractors. "

Antti Hiltunen, VALOA design
