99 St Georges Terrace

The tower block that stands in Saint Georges Terrace, Perth's main shopping street, is of an average size and was originally built in the 1970s. It is a perfect example of a high-rise that limits both ground consumption and the need to construct other new buildings. In the construction sector, regenerating buildings such as this has become a highly strategic operation offering cultural, economic and environmental benefits. This particular restoration project has expanded the ground floor sales areas and created a restaurant covering several floors as well as a roof garden offering spectacular views over the vibrant hustle and bustle in the surrounding streets. The outside of the building has also been regenerated. Its typically 1970s beige and brown facades have been replaced with a grid of iridescent material, that is also the base for the new lighting design. This consists of a series of window-mounted Trick luminaires that throw irregular brushstrokes of light over the building's facades. The result is a distinctive, uneven grid pattern that has turned the building into a landmark on Perth's nocturnal skyline.
